Marlin's Pitcher Jose Fernandez Dies in Boat Crash
/One of Major League Baseball's top pitchers was tragically killed in a boating accident early Sunday morning. The victims and the wreckage were found by a routine patrol Sunday morning.
The announcement of his untimely death was met with shared grief and shock.
“In the time I covered baseball, I’ve never met anyone who extracted more joy, more passion out of what he did than Jose Fernandez", said ESPN Reporter Buster Olney.
Fernandez's record over four seasons, include a 38-17 record, with a 2.58 earned run average. He was also a Cy Young contender this year: his 16-8 record, and 2.87 ERA helped keep the Marlins in the playoff race. His 12.5 strikeouts per nine innings was among the best in the MLB, and also the fifth best for a starting pitcher in history.
Fernandez leaves behind his pregnant girlfriend that is carrying his child.
